A challenging start to the term

I am sure you are aware of how many absences have been recorded in school since we returned from the Christmas holiday.  Since we returned I have managed on average 18 members of staff out each day with a range of issues, mostly Covid related.  This has stretched our capacity to cover all classes and I have made good use of our internal non-class based and supply teachers to ensure all children have been eudacted in school.  On a few rare occasions it has been necessary to split a class as we have not been able to find additional teachers.  To date no class has been sent home for remote learning.  I would like to thank all of our staff for supporting me in managing the challenges and being so flexible at this difficult time.

The office has also recorded a much higher rate of pupil absences due to Covid since we returned to school.  Most classes now have at least one child who has tested positive.  I am pleased to say I am unaware of any child with a major medical difficulty as a result of a Covid infection.  The majority of cases appear to have been contracted outside school and there is little evidence of transmission inside.  Our staff are also mostly recovering well after their infections.

We appear to have an average experience when compared to other schools, this situation is very common in Redbridge.  The last two weeks have been a great challenge but the Gearies community has rallied together well and we continue to provide excellent education and care for the children.  Thank you for your help, support and understanding, I am hoping the worst of the current Covid wave is behind us.  I am looking forward to a quieter time in the coming weeks, where we can focus our attention on delivery more excellent teaching to the childrne in each class.
