Please note the following addendum to our current behaviour policy, written to address the Covid-19 context. Please ensure your child is aware of our high expectations for behaviour. A copy of our existing full policy can also be found on our website. This is reviewed each year.
1. Introduction
The school has an existing Behaviour Policy which sets out our arrangements for supporting effective behaviour management in the school, in line with the DfE’s guidance – “Behaviour and discipline in schools” (January 2016).
This addendum sets out the amendments that have been necessary to implement in relation to the guidance from the DfE and the Local Authority in relation to managing risks associated with COVID-19.
Some behaviour concerns referred to in this addendum may have previously been deemed less serious, however, if an action now results in a potential compromise of a person’s ability to socially distance and stay safe, it will now be treated in a more serious manner.
2. Standards of behaviour
All of our existing expectations, as stated in our current policy, remain in place. In response to the demands of meeting health and safety guidance as a result of the global pandemic, the following new routines will be implemented in September 2020:
a) On arrival at school, all pupils will part from their parents at the school gates and proceed to their classrooms. On arrival in the building all children are expected to wash their hands, following current DfE advice, before entering their classrooms.
b) Children are expected to wash their hands whenever they re-enter the building following a break, to prevent infection.
c) Children should always move around the school in silence, moving on the left of the corridors, following the instructions of the teacher in charge.
d) All year group bubbles have been timetabled not to have breaks that overlap with other year groups. Each year group will have breaks in different parts of the school, including separate playground zones. Children should always only mix with children in their same year group, and never mix with children in other year groups.
e) Children are not expected to socially distance from each other within their classrooms and the playground, as long as they are within their class/year group bubble.
3. Teaching guidance
a) All teachers need to remind the children of our new expectations on a regular basis
b) Teachers will regularly praise the children for complying with our new expectations, rewards may be negotiated in addition to our usual reward systems.
c) If a child is in breach of these new expectations, the teacher must remind the child of our expectations and warn of the potential consequences if repeated.
d) Serious behaviours that pose a health hazard include; not following the expectation to wash hands, deliberately socialising with a child in a different year group, deliberately coughing or spitting at someone else
4. Additional sanctions
a) Repeated and deliberate breaches of our expectations need to be communicated to Senior Leaders and the child’s parents/carers. Potential sanctions may involve exclusion from school if the behaviour poses a serious health hazard.
