Week Nine News

Return to school:
You will by now be aware we will not now be asking children to return to classes until after the week beginning 15th June.  We will be awaiting further recommendations from SAGE and guidance from the local authority before any dates are agreed.  As soon as our position is clear we will be contacting the relevant year groups.  At the moment, the earliest return dates will be:

  1. year six in the week beginning 15th June
  2. year one in the week beginning 22nd June
There are no plans currently for any other year groups to be invited back.  All decisions are based on what we consider in the best interests of children and our staff.  Everyone's health and safety continues to be our top priority.  You must appreciate that at the moment we receive a daily deluge of opinion, guidance and confusion which is difficult to keep up with.   The school consults widely with Senior leaders, Trade Unions, the local authority, governors, other local schools and other professional bodies on the best course of action, whilst exercising appropriate caution at all times.  Many decisions on what to do next are being left up to the school.  There is definitely not a consensus of the best way forward.  We apologise if this appears confusing to you, we are having to make many adjustments to our plans on a regular basis.

Keyworker Daycare:
A big thank you to all the teachers and practitioners who have been supporting Daycare this week.  The children are a joy to be around and the team have done their best to meet their needs.
Numbers shot up this week to 18 on average, reflecting the slow return to work by keyworkers.  We are now using 3 classrooms and implementing social distancing as best we can.  Staffing now runs to two teachers and two practitioners each day.

Pupil reports:
All the reports have been successfully sent via Ping.  My thanks to Mrs Heys and the office team for their hard work on getting this done ahead of our deadline.

Art Projects:
Our “Arms around the school” project was completed on Thursday, thanks especially to Mrs Cotton and Mrs Taylor for their help getting onto the fences.  A film of the work is available on our website:

Children in the Daycare are working on a Lockdown mural, preparations have begun, guided by Mr Lea.

Home Learning summary:
Uptake seems to be holding firm and in some year groups increasing.  My thanks to all the teachers for their hard work here.  Where there has been an increase in activity, this seems to have been stimulated by phone calls or home visits.
Developmental feedback is helping children’s progress.
We have recently combined all the home learning in year three into one central blog for the four classes.  This is now offering a more consistent resource to all these children.
There will be no home learning set by the class teachers over half term, though if you wish to, there are plenty of activities available on the year group blogs for you to look up.  Class home learning will resume on 1st June.  Please be aware that frequency and detail will change once teachers are back in school teaching the classes.  More details will follow nearer the time.

Online teaching/Zoom meetings with children and parents:
Mrs Barker has finished training all the class teachers this week on how to lead a Zoom lesson.  I will shortly be issuing details on the content and frequency of new Zoom Lessons.   These will begin after half term.  The aim is to offer each child the opportunity to take part in an online lesson with a teacher at least once a week, to start with.
As confirmed earlier, each child must return a consent form to a nominated member of staff before being allowed to take part.  Teachers will be in touch in June with details.

Repairs and Maintenance:
The Premises Team have completed the decorating of the Junior hall.  This has been painted and repaired, and the floor polished ready for use.

The long awaited Fitness Trail itself has been painted, giving structure to the playground design.

The playground spaces will soon be marked out for the Y6 playground and the Y1 playground spaces.  This will be completed by the end of the week beginning 8th June.

Summer holidays:
We can confirm the school will be closed as normal for the summer holidays.  We have no details at the moment of the arrangements for returning to school in September.  As soon as a decision is made we will be in touch.

After School Club:
Our ASC provision, run by Jules et Lis, is not able to operate at the moment.

Messages from the local authority:
1. Social distancing is the responsibility of all ages
We’ve received a large number of reports that young people are congregating in parks. Government guidance still says that social distancing is vital to  contain Coronavirus.
We would be grateful if you could remind parents that young people still need to maintain social distancing and should not be meeting with groups of friends. They are only allowed to meet one other person, and they must remain two metres apart.
Social distancing is the responsibility of all ages, further details at https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/staying-alert-and-safe-social-distancing

2. Coronavirus testing
The Government has opened up coronavirus testing to all adults and children over five who have experienced any of the following coronavirus symptoms:
• A new continuous cough
• A high temperature
• A loss of or change in normal sense of smell or taste
It will enable those with symptoms to find out whether they have the virus.
To book a test, or for more information visit: https://www.redbridge.gov.uk/coronavirus-information-hub/coronavirus-testing/
