Home Learning - Frequently Asked Questions

The teachers have worked very hard to provide a supportive package of home learning guidance for your children to engage with during the school closure.  As week one draws to a close, we would like to thank you for supporting your children’s learning during this time of crisis.  We hope you are managing to access the leaning and that you have been using the communication options for getting in touch with the teachers.  To further support you, we have produced this list of FAQs to inform you over the coming week.  We hope you find this also helps.

How long is the school closure going to last?
At the moment we do not know.  There have been no guidelines at all or reliable indications of what to expect.  It would be misleading to tell you anything at the moment.  Your best source of information is the media.  As soon as the school learns of anything, we will be in touch.

I have been having trouble with the USO Homework site.  Is there a problem with this or am I doing something wrong?
We are happy to confirm that most children in all classes are successfully accessing the Homework support.  If you are having problems, please get in touch with the school via email and we will see if we can help you further.  Problems have occurred if your home device is very old or using software not up to date.  Check your internet connection and see if your software may need updating.   Also, check you have the correct username and password.

I have no printer at home, he can complete the online learning but cannot create anything directly online.  Can the school give me a book to work in?
We are unable to help you if you do not have a printer, however we can offer you a blank exercise book to use at home.  Some children have been doing their learning, taking a photo of it and sending it to their teachers via the class blog.  We can see some excellent standards being maintained this way.  If you would like to collect an exercise book, please call the office and confirm a time when you are coming here to collect it.

I do not have a laptop for my child to use at home.  Can I borrow one from the school?
We are working on trying to free up a limited number for home use.  If we are able to loan some out, there will need to be reassurances they are to be used only for home learning.  We cannot help with internet access.  We will have more news on this later in the week.

Is it important that my child does their home learning each day?
This is really important.  We would encourage children to follow our home learning routine, published previously on the blog.  It is important to be learning at home each day with whatever resources you are able to use.  Take up in each class is variable, well done to the year 6 classes who have impressive use in week one.  If you do not keep learning each day, children will start forgetting their key knowledge, skills and understanding, and be at a big disadvantage when we do eventually return to school.

Can I borrow more reading books to use at home?
We are happy to loan some of our library books to use at home.  If you want to come in a collect some, please phone the office to agree a collection time.  Most year groups have also posted details of online reading activities for the children to use. These offer a good, age appropriate alternative.

Can you change the format of the work being set online to Microsoft Word?
Unfortunately, we are not able to do so.  Please do the best you can with your home online platforms, consider writing the work our by hand and posting it back via the blog.

Should I get in touch with my child’s class teacher to share progress and if so, which is the best way of doing this?
If you want to get in touch with a class teacher, the best way of doing this is by email to the school office.  There will obviously be a time delay in getting a reply back to you, but we will do our best.

Will the school be supporting home learning over the scheduled Easter holiday?
Teachers will not be setting any new home learning over the Easter break.  This is a holiday and teachers will not mark work or respond to any returns during this fortnight.  New work and support will be available from 20th April.

Why has the class teacher not responded to any of my child’s work?
If a class teacher does not respond to online learning this may be because they are unwell.  Many of the teaching team are also ill at the moment, some with suspected coronavirus.  Please be patient.  Mr Drew is monitoring teachers’ marking and is ensuring all teachers who are able to mark work, do so.
