Changes to our end of year reports

You may well be aware of the many changes the government have introduced to the education system over the past year.  Some of the most significant that affect your child are around testing and assessment.

Since September 2014 we have been teaching the new National Curriculum to children from years one to six; this has a different content from the old version.  In addition to this, the old system of assessment has been changed.  We now no longer refer to levels of attainment.  We have been charged with introducing a new way of assessing without levels.  Each school is developing its own response to this.  We have been piloting a new system and are busy putting the finishing touches to this.  At the end of the year, instead of referring to children’s attainment as level 1A, 4C or 5B, we will be able to tell you whether your child is working at the new national standard, working towards it or working beyond it.  We feel this is a simpler way of understanding what your child has achieved.  We have used the latest government guidance on these standards for each year group.  Our new school reports will contain a short statement against each subject in which your child is learning, indicating your child’s is currently level of attainment.

The remaining sections of the report will include reference to last year’s targets, set in the last report.  Your child will write a section on what he/she has enjoyed learning most, what achievements they are most proud of and what they feel they need to focus on in the future.  This will be complemented with a summary statement from the class teacher, and new targets for your child to aim towards over the next six months.

We hope you will find this more focussed report an improvement on what we share with you and how you can support your child’s future learning.

For the last year, children in years two and six will also receive their assessment results for the SATs they took part in over May.  These do refer to national curriculum levels and mark the last time that format will be used.

Each child’s report will be handed out to parents and carers at the end of the day on Friday 10th July.  The class teachers will be available to discuss them with you if you wish, in the final consultation session on Monday 13th July from 3:30 to 5:00pm.  No appointments are necessary.
