Industrial Action

You may well be aware that one of the largest teaching unions, the NEU, have agreed to take industrial action over four dates in the coming month, in a dispute with the government over pay and conditions.  The dates are:

  • Wednesday 1st February
  • Thursday 2nd March
  • Wednesday 15th March
  • Thursday 16th March

This is a national dispute, unconnected with any specific relationships at our school.  Some of the teachers at Gearies are considering striking on these days.  If that happens then the school will be closed for the children in the affected classes only.  The rest of the school will remain open.  All children in those classes will be sent home and there will be no home learning organised in advance.  Any child who receives a free school meal can order in advance a packed lunch as part of their Pupil Premium status, however you will need to come into school to collect it from our office.

I am contacting you to give you advance warning and to give you time to try and find alternative child care for the days.  The first date is next week.  I will be making another announcement before the weekend with names of the classes for teachers who have declared their intentions. Please be mindful that some teachers may not communicate their intent to strike until the day itself, so there is a chance that I may have to make additional class closures on the day.

I appreciate this will be distressing to you, however by giving you advance warning you will have time to get in place child care arrangements in case your child is affected.  .
