Covid update

The local transmission of Covid-19 in Redbridge continued to rise sharply this week, all new cases have been confirmed to be the Delta variant.  The need to isolate class bubbles has been necessary in many Redbridge schools, in fact you may be aware one of our year five classes is currently in isolation and receiving remote learning from their class teacher as there was a positive case reported in that class.  We wish them all well and look forward to welcoming them back in just over a week.  The school will definitely not now be removing any of its existing safety measures for the rest of term or in the first week back in September, irrespective of what the government may announce for the national picture.  We need to keep our community safe and secure, it would not be prudent to relax arrangements at this moment as the risks of spreading the infection are actually rising here.

RSHE consultations

We hosted three parent meetings this week, they have been well attended.  The powerpoint used in the presentation will be posted shortly on the school website:  https://www.geariesprimaryschool.co.uk/rshe/ .  We intend to send out a questionnaire to parents as the last opportunity to respond to our proposals via SchoolPing.  Please look out for this, it will be sent out next week.  Our Board of Governors will make the final decision on content for both the syllabus and policy at a special meeting before the end of term.

Date confirmed for new INSET Day

We had not yet determined the actual dates of two of our annual INSET days in order to give the school flexibility for staff training options.  The first new date has just been agreed by the Board of Governors – Wednesday 15th September.  There will be no classes here on the day, we are going to be trained on Reading Deep Dives in preparation for a possible Ofsted inspection.  This will be provided by Gerard Durcan, a trusted local consultant.  Please note the date in your diary.

Governor update

There have been a few changes to the terms of office of some of our governors, full details can be found on our website: https://www.geariesprimaryschool.co.uk/board-of-governors/ .

Local school falling rolls

Gearies Primary school continues to be very poplar with local families, we have long waiting lists for all year groups and enjoy the trust and support of the local community.  The picture in other local schools is not the same – in five neighbouring primary schools the birth rate has declined significantly and these schools have requested to reduce in size.  Most wish to reduce by one class per year group, one has asked to reduce by two.  This may be the case in more schools over the coming year as mobility in the population continues to rise and the impact of falling birth rates will affect the pool of available children.
