Year Six classes return to school

I can share with you a significant amount of detail already completed on the plans to re-open the school in June.  My thanks to the many colleagues and governors who have contributed so far to the consultation phase.

Please note that these are still plans, detail can still be amended if necessary.  It is important to note that at the moment we are readying for opening, and the preparations are well advanced.

The school plan is to begin the Y6 phased return in the week beginning 15th June – see notes below.  Organisation and risk assessment will be reviewed each day and completed by the end of the week to influence week two and further provision.

Curriculum detail:

Curriulum detail:

In Year 6, we are planning a wide range of learning experiences to meet the diverse needs of the children as they return to school and to help them be best prepared for secondary life. Through a newly developed PSHE programme, amongst other things we will address the children’s worries or concerns about going to secondary school, teach them how to deal with a wide range of new situations and help them to manage their money and their timetables. The children will be free to answer any questions they wish and we will do our best to answer them.
In our core learning, we aim to revise the key areas of Maths & English to help the children both remember what they have already learnt at Gearies and learn some of the key vocabulary they will encounter early on in Year 7.
From the first week, we will begin an embroidery project for the school. Before starting this, we will discuss the children’s experiences of life in lockdown to begin the healing process of the disruption. We have all been adversely affected in some way, and this hands-on project will help to bring life back to normal, teach the children new skills and immortalise the history we’re living through for future generations.

When you bring your child to school, we recommend you walk, cycle or use a car.  You are advised to avoid using public transport if possible.  Please present your child to the entrance gate and ensure you say goodbye before you get to the gate.  Mr Drew will be present to greet everyone.  As soon as your child arrives, he/she needs to proceed across the playground to the entrance doors.  Parents need to immediately leave the site and return home.  Parents will not be allowed on school premises, we will also not be holding any conversations at the gate.  We are trying to avoid a queue on entry, hence the generous opening window times.  If you arrive and there is a queue, please remain 2m distant from the people in front of you, please be patient.

Collection details:

At the end of each day, each class has its own staggered exit time window.  Please proceed to the gate within that time.  Before that time, the children will be lined up in the playground in a 2m distant line.  As soon as you arrive, please inform the member of staff at the gate who you are collecting.  Your child will then be released.  Please leave the location as soon as possible, avoid meeting with other families.

Other details:

The children have been organised into social bubbles, with friends wherever possible.  The members of staff that will be working with them will remain the same each day, to maintain the bubble and prevent cross infection with the other people on site.  Each class unit will have its own teacher, and a member of the support staff will be allocated to supervise playtimes and lunchtimes.  Each class will have a set of their own resources to use at playtime, which will be cleaned at the end of the day, and not shared with the other classes.

Children need only bring in to school a water bottle, a piece of fruit for morning snack and their PE kit.  The children will only have one PE lesson a week, the kit needs to be taken home afterwards and washed.

Please do not bring back book bags or work completed at home.

You should wash your child’s clothing at the end of each day.  If you do not have enough school uniform to manage this each day, children will be allowed to come in out of uniform.

Each child will be using a personal set of learning resources, that will not be shared with others.  They will sit at a personal desk, 2m distant from everyone else.

Dinners – you may either provide a packed lunch or order a school dinner.  All school dinners will be the packed lunch equivalent, not a hot meal.  All meals will be eaten in the classroom at the child’s desk.

Whilst we are delivering this provision, we will be offering a more limited home learning support for the children not attending.  Mr Sadeeq will be in charge of this until the end of term.  He will not be able to offer feedback, however home learning will be set for those not here, but not to the degree you have enjoyed so far.  He will continue to teach Zoom lessons with you, dates and login details will be communicated to you each week in advance.

Children can only attend a Y6 class or Keyworker Daycare.  In order to preserve the social bubbles and prevent potential cross infection, children con not be moved from one group to another.

Please instruct your child on effective handwashing, we expect them to wash hands properly on entry to the site and after each break.  Please ensure your child is also trained in keeping 2m distance from others.  In the new block we have a one-way system in the corridors and on the stairs, and a singular entrance and exit from the site.  Access to the toilets will be limited to one at a time, children will need to wash thoroughly afterwards.  The water fountains have been turned off, children need to use personal water bottles during the day.

If a child shows symptoms of infection, he/she will be taken to the medical room and checked.  If symptoms are confirmed, the child will remain in our Isolation Room next to the school office until a parent can come and collect.  Parents will be recommended to ask for a test and inform the school immediately of the results.  Staff have been offered appropriate PPE when supporting the children.

If you have any questions, please address these to the school office.  We aim to reply as soon as possible.
